Les Vilains sound somewhat like the good French bands from the mid-eighties, and especially when listening to the first 2 songs of the "Belgique hooligans" SCD, Brutal Combat sure comes to mind. Both songs are sung in French. The third song is in Flemish slang and is basically a joke. It's the band's hello to their fans from the city of Bruges.

Les Vilains started out in 1997, and actually started off as a joke. Any band that played Belgium in those years will remember some guy getting on stage and starting to sing some songs on his own. Well, that was him, the Vilains' singer, Suck (no, it's not what you think!).

Because of the success of the first CD, they started taking things more seriously. Although often considered an RAC band, the band rather consider themselves as an Oi band, but a politically incorrect one, a real skinhead band in short!

Since the start the band has gone through a lot of line-up changes, first with Gabber-Tim leaving to concentrate on his studies, then Fredje / Tichke for family reasons and finally Schimmel who got thrown out of the band because of a lack of dedication. The actual line-up (summer of 2003) consist of Suck (vocals), Rianne (backing vocals), Kris (lead guitar), Dieter (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), Olivier (bass) and Nysie (drums).

Although the band hasn't played too many shows, they can boost having played with some of the best-known bands around : Condemned 84, Section 5, Brutal Attack, Bagadou Stourm, Headcase, Legion Of St George, Menace, Vicious Rumours, The Crack, Celtic Warrior, Mistreat, Steelcapped Strength, English Rose, Kampfzone, On File, The Warriors, The Pride, Super Yob, Offside, Trouble Makers, Hardsell, and so on....

LES VILAINS - "Les derniers rebelles" - Cd (PURE IMPACT 2003)

Belgium's Les Vilains are one of those bands that have eluded me in the past, despite being around for a while now. In fact, the only time I haveheard them was at a gig in Herne bay a while back, so I thought it was high time I checked this band out. Smart move me thinks! Les Vilains play a rough and ready style of Oi which is not too different to the likes of Condemned 84 in parts and there's plenty of rabble rousing, shit kicking numbers on here to keep you happy. Unlike a lot of euro bands, Les Vilains choose to sing in their native tongue of 'Flemish', which is a bit like French I think! (Steve sits and listens to the sound of several million Belgians pissing themselves with laughter at his obvious ignorance of their native language! DOH!) A lot of hardened UK Oi boys find it a bit off putting when a band sings in their own language (I.e not English!) but for bands like these, I couldn't imagine them any other way. Proof of the pudding for example, is their cover of Combat 84's 'Rapist'. Easily as good as the original in my opinion, and now I have the benefit of knowing this song in two languages! . Title track, Les derniers rebelles (The last rebels), Jet set skinheads, and Belgique hooligans (Belgium hooligans) are as in yer face as you can get! Angry and aggressive as all good streetpunk should be.

Other songs that also get the old blood pumping are Non serons toujours la (We're here to stay) and La loi du plus fort (The law of the strongest). For my money though, the stand out track on the whole lp is the excellent Ambiorix, which sees the band pay respect to one of Belgium's forgotten historical heroes. Fast and furious, but still very tuneful throughout, this song kicks ass! Oh, and just in case you think that Johnny foreigner doesn't have a sense of humour, check out the intro the the song 'Les Vilains', I nearly cracked a rib with laughter! Good production and smart cover, which can be expected from Pure Impact, and now that Suck and Rianne are about to shut up shop at the De Kastelein, lets hope they concentrate more time on the band and release more top stuff like this......(Rated ***½)
